Because I did say I'd link to this...
Aug. 3rd, 2007 07:59 amComics joy from
scans_daily...
- Crécy - bad language and xenophobia. Not my favourite pages, as they don't have the explanation of the Normans, but...
- Ms. Marvel - in which NextWave's Aaron Stack (don't call him 'Machine Man') gets to hang around with proper superheroes. He's still quite badly behaved. :)
A few words about comics
Jul. 26th, 2007 11:30 pm...there's a lot of Warren Ellis stuff out today, isn't there?
Doktor Sleepless #1, which is a slow build but definitely looking interesting. Ellis himself has compared it to Transmetropolitan, which seems fair.
Black Summer #1 is actually part 2 of the story, following on from the prologue in issue #0. John Horus is a superhero. He deals with the criminals that the law can't touch... and he's just walked into the White House and executed the President of the United States of America. Nicely done, and with a last page twist that throws things in a very interesting direction.
Last, but most definitely not least, there's Crécy. I like this one. A lot. If it turns up on
scans_daily then I'm likely to be posting links, 'cos I think it's the best thing Ellis has written in a while. And it's completely different in style to any comic I've read in a very long time.

Jul. 15th, 2007 12:11 pmHmm. Not sure about The Enemy just yet. Interesting, though.
And it's certainly good to see a local band that seems to be doing well...
Edit 1: Possibly I should have made it to the Godiva Festival last night, then. Ho hum.
Edit 2: ...there's something a little bit reminiscent of early Marillion (Garden Party etc) about the opening vocals on Had Enough, isn't there? Or is that just me? It all goes a bit Who later, anyway...

So far today, I have...
Jul. 10th, 2007 07:07 pm- Acquired an art book containing the complete set of Hokusai's views of Mount Fuji
- Made it to the butcher to shop for food before work. Go me.
- Unexpectedly won an iPod shuffle.
- Decided that I'm utterly knackered.
- Survived another day at work.
Now I just need to tidy the house, cook food, do the washing up, wash some work clothes for tomorrow... and go to sleep.
Am just a bit tired. So much for the "take it easy this week" plan.
Upcoming cookbooks...
Jul. 9th, 2007 06:42 pm...which may be of interest to a few people reading this.
The "River Cottage" Fish Book - Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall & Nick Fisher
Beyond Nose to Tail: A Kind of British Cooking: Part II - Fergus Henderson & Justin Piers Gellatly
In Search of Perfection 2 - Heston Blumenthal

Lazy Sunday
Jul. 8th, 2007 05:26 pmHaven't had one of these for a while. So far I've done some reading, done a (very) little tidying, chatted to
mhw on the phone, cooked myself lunch and watched some TV.
First morning in many weeks when I didn't have an alarm set. Pleasant.

It's been an interesting weekend so far - and it ain't quite over yet...
We've had ballet, including Pineapple Poll (I didn't quite understand the history of the piece 'til I read Wikipedia - I'd assumed it was an original Sullivan project...). There's been a trip to the Leamington Peace Festival with
blooddoll3, plus Sunday morning tea with
dmh.
(And no,
mister_jack, I didn't forget to feed your cats... :)

Jun. 11th, 2007 08:18 pmLife is still good. Well, mostly.
The not-so-good bits include boiler malfunctions (first there was water everywhere - now there's no hot water whatsoever 'til Wednesday... and absolutely no water in the kitchen...) and unresolved double glazing issues (still needs one pane replacing).
Other than that, life's not bad at all.

Slow news day?
Jun. 9th, 2007 09:06 pmCathedral row over video war game - currently the top story on the BBC news site
Manchester cathedral appears relatively briefly, as part of a larger sequence set in Manchester. As for the "virtual shoot-out in the cathedral's nave in which hundreds of enemies are killed", it fails to mention that they're mostly a swarm of dog-sized alien animals...
Sony may well have messed up by featuring the cathedral without permission, but the reporting is also putting a "gun crime" spin on this that doesn't really fit the game itself.

Jun. 6th, 2007 07:42 amLooks like I won't be making this month's B-Movie on Friday.
This is probably just as well, as I'm still half-awake after failing to catch up on sleep from Leipzig. Bah!

Double glazing, day two..er...one
Jun. 5th, 2007 11:49 pmSo. This is going well...
So. This was supposed to be a two day job. And after two days they've almost finished one of the six windows & doors involved...
- Yesterday they didn't turn up to start the job. Their head office was very apologetic about this.
- Today they turned up, put the french doors in, broke their drillbit and a pane of glass, then went home at lunchtime as the nearest spares were in Loughborough...

Blank page, revisited (part 2)....
Jun. 4th, 2007 11:31 pm#3 - Pretty much anything people feel like, I guess.
#4 - Probably true. I do have recipes for nettle soup, which I keep meaning to try, but I'm wondering whether it's now too late in the year.
#5 - They are? Oh well. Have fun with 'em, then. They were mostly just gathering dust in the cupboard, after all.
#6 - Only now do I appreciate her true purpose. How could she have been so overlooked in her own time?
#7 - Um. That's a tough one. So... honest answer to a rhetorical question? Occasionally, maybe I have a little confidence in this. Mostly, I don't. History and stuff. Things change, though.
