Two questions for those of you who take an interest in such things.

Firstly, does anyone know anywhere this side of the Atlantic that still stocks Alaskan Smoked Porter? I haven't seen any for a year or two . :-/

Secondly, on a similar theme - Smokehead single malt whisky. Anyone tried it? Is it worth sampling? I was considering picking up a bottle for Whitby.

Thank'ee...

From the delightful WorldNetDaily:
"a vile, pro-terrorist piece of neo-Marxist, left-wing propaganda filled with radical sexual politics and nasty attacks on religion and Christianity"

(Actually, I liked it a lot. Saw it yesterday. Some things they changed for the worse - and I may post about that later - but not bad)

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

"V sets off fireworks around the incinerated building as if it were the Fourth of July"

...as if it were November 5th, surely? (Um, hang on, what date was it again...)

Positive review. That particular line amused me, though.

A little while back I made a fairly blunt post about the BNP's latest leaflet (I'm not a fan, in case you hadn't guessed)

This attracted a couple of anonymous comments from people who thought I was being more than a little unfair to the BNP. The second comment included this:
I am not in agreement with a lot of the BNP's policies and also find they have no policies in relation to a lot of issues but in answer to their question on the leaflet I know which I find most offensive. I also find it offensive that one image shows a section of people breaking the law and still to this day not one single person has been charged or is ever likely to be.
I don't know if anyone's seen this on the BBC website today, but...

Five men have been arrested over their alleged role in protests against cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad, Scotland Yard said

The BBC site also shows that Omar Khayam, who dressed as a suicide bomber, "was arrested and recalled to prison" shortly after the protest - he'd been released on licence after serving half his sentence.

Looks like some people may get charged after all, then. So much for the double standard. If people want to argue politics with me, that's fine - however much I disagree with those politics. I do get a little annoyed when people make assumptions and/or opinion replaces fact, though.

About an hour ago, someone pushed the latest BNP leaflet through my letterbox. The "Which do you find offensive?" one, republishing one of the cartoons of Muhammad alongside a photo of the "Muslim demonstrators calling for terrorist attacks on Europe and the 'extermination' of non-Muslims".

The first line of text on the other side of the leaflet states that "a healthy democracy needs cartoonists to poke fun at humourless fanatics"...

...and I suddenly feel the need for some BNP cartoons.

As some people will already be aware, there's a certain concern about Dubai Ports World taking control of six U.S. ports.

"From our point of view, we don't want foreigners controlling our ports" - Thomas Kean

Fair enough. But the only reason that DP World is in this position is that they've just bought P&O - who already had control of those ports. And P&O was based in London, not American...

Breath of Life
Frankenstein
History of Guns
Manuskript
Spares (Ex Children on Stun)
Swarf
Zombina & the Skeletones

"Plus one unconfirmed...."

Works for me. One band I've wanted to see for a while (History of Guns), five I like, one I'm vaguely intrigued by but have never really heard.

I suspect I may be at Convergence.

If not, I'll be in Leeds for BTV. Either way, I see excellent music in my future...

So, I'm steadily ploughing through Season Six of the West Wing. I watched King Corn the other day, with its subplot about a Turkish woman who's going to be executed for adultery.

A couple of small problems with that, which a quick google easily confirms.

  1. Turkey abolished the death penalty in 2002. They hadn't actually executed anyone since 1984.
  2. Turkey did have an old law against adultery on the books until 1996 - when it was struck down by their constitutional court. The maximum penalty appears to have been two years, more or less in line with old US and UK adultery laws. I'm not sure when the last successful prosecution was, mind you
  3. Yes, there has since been a 'family values' campaign from conservative politicians who want to reinstate the law in some form. It attracted a lot of press. It failed.
  4. Oh, and Turkey's old laws were drawn from European - not Islamic - roots. It was founded as a secular state, after all.

It seems that this episode offended a lot of people in Turkey. I can't think why...

This is an extremely silly video.

Requires sound. Possibly NSFW, depending where you work.

At home. Not pubbing due to illness - as soon as we got the heating fixed, the cold from hell hit me. I now have a hacking cough and a vile headache. I'm fuelled by lemsip and not much else right now. Blah.

On a more positive note, I'm listening to We Are Scientists. I like 'em.

Royksopp - What Else Is There?

I've just heard this for the first time. More precisely, I think I just heard the 'Jacques Lu Cont Radio Mix', as it wasn't quite the standard version.

I like it. This disturbs me for several reasons. Not least because if I'm starting to like the music they play on HMV's in-store radio, then... :)

Just got home. Not in London. This alone means that today is Not Going According to Plan. Which sucks. The temperature ain't helping, either.

Might console myself with the pub. In the mean time, I can't resist linking to this lovely quote on the BBC site, a comment on last night's Question Time:

"Until about three minutes ago I judged my eligibility to be a fully paid-up member of the human race against the strength with which I disagreed with everything Norman Tebbit ever said."
