Not good...
Nov. 12th, 2006 10:24 amEdward's No. 8 caught fire last night.
Sounds like that might be the end of the place, from the BBC description. :-/
I know a few people reading this were there last night - I've already seen one post about stuff left in a cloakroom and then lost in the fire. Looks like everyone there got out ok, though, which is the important bit.

In a Little Chef restaurant just outside Doncaster.
jambon_gris has just phoned to say he and
mister_jack are stuck in traffic at Junction 46 (the A1M), due to some sort of accident. He's also saying that they saw a bomb disposal van roll past, but he may not be the most reliable witness...
Comics (creator) geekery - lettering
Oct. 26th, 2006 08:30 am"To be a good letterer you need to be called Tom Frame or Todd Klein. Simple as that." - Alan Donald
I could add another couple of names to that list, but... yeah.

The head of the British Army has said the British should "get out some time soon" and "our presence in Iraq exacerbates" the "difficulties we are experiencing round the world".
Not quite matching the Downing Street view. Well, not the Downing Street public view, anyway.

Looking back
Sep. 11th, 2006 06:02 pmFive years already? I guess so. I was sitting at work when the news came in.
Alan, who sat opposite me, had the BBC News tickertape running - his first comment was something like "some idiot's managed to fly a plane into a skyscraper". Then the details started to arrive. BBC live news was on one of the big screens in one of our meeting rooms. People drifted in and out, watching snippets, looking a little dazed.
People said that there might be 50,000 dead; that there were more dead than Hiroshima; that this must be Iraq. There were other planes, but nobody knew how many. Lots of rumours and misinformation.
Despite all the news footage, it took a little while to understand that this was real.
[I was already on LJ at the time. There are a few posts from 11/09/01 and the days that followed in the archives. It's strange for me to look back at that sort of thing, to see just how events have shifted]

Join the dots...
Sep. 10th, 2006 10:11 pmRight then. It's Sunday night. Time to stir things up...
I suppose this just proves that I know a lot of LARPers and tabletop gamers. No surprise there. But I don't think that many of you know each other - at least not through me - as you've ended up on my friends list from a number of different directions.
So. Anyone for introductions and random nattering about either or both of the topics mentioned above? :)
- I know a whole bunch of you were doing the Maelfroth thing
- ...and more than a few of you have also mentioned Ptolus

[comics] ...er...yeah...
Sep. 8th, 2006 10:24 amSo, Frank Miller will now be writing a story where Batman takes on Al Qaeda...
Miller proudly announced the title of his next Batman book, which he will write, draw and ink. Holy Terror, Batman! is no joke. And Miller doesn't hold back on the true purpose of the book, calling it "a piece of propoganda," where 'Batman kicks al Qaeda's ass."The response from another notable Batman writer, Grant Morrison, is less than positive...
"Batman vs. Al Qaeda! It might as well be Bin Laden vs. King Kong! Or how about the sinister Al Qaeda mastermind up against a hungry Hannibal Lecter! For all the good it's likely to do. Cheering on a fictional character as he beats up fictionalized terrorists seems like a decadent indulgence when real terrorists are killing real people in the real world. I'd be so much more impressed if Frank Miller gave up all this graphic novel nonsense, joined the Army and, with a howl of undying hate, rushed headlong onto the front lines with the young soldiers who are actually risking life and limb 'vs' Al Qaeda - Grant Morrison

Sep. 7th, 2006 08:04 amTony Blair appears to have accepted the inevitable and is expected to finally announce a timetable for his resignation within hours
I know that some of you will disagree, but I have to believe this is a good thing. Blair's been there too long, he's lost his credibility and he needs to go.
I don't want to see Labour disintegrate completely - it's not healthy for British democracy when one party is unelectable - but they have to face the future and start fixing the things that the Blair years have broken.
Personally, I reckon he'll be gone before the end of January. Perhaps sooner.
