The head of the British Army has said the British should "get out some time soon" and "our presence in Iraq exacerbates" the "difficulties we are experiencing round the world".

Not quite matching the Downing Street view. Well, not the Downing Street public view, anyway.

How inconvenient, I wonder how the Democrats are going to get round this one?

There's 50:50 chance that it was preapproved, or even stage managed by Downing Street. They are a bit stuffed, basically -- they can't be seen to do a U-turn on policy, but if the *army* is saying that it is necessary to get out of Iraq, they have a getout clause. Of course, in the short term, they deny everything, but in a few weeks, they will no doubt, 'reluctantly give in to the military's demands.'

There is always more to these kinds of statement than meets the eye.
