I have increasing confidence my MP, Harry Cohen, even though I didn't vote for him. Yay.

Mine, on the other hand, is still one of Blair's most loyal goons. Bob Ainsworth, deputy chief whip.

[and Reading the Harry Cohen entry, I think I quite like him:

"A former local government accountant, he is on the left of the Labour Party, and voted against military action in Iraq.

Knew the result, but Harry voted against! I know he's normally a rebel on important things anyway, but yes! I worked my arse off during the general election for his campaign and today that proves it was worth it! : )

I e-mailed Jim Cunningham about the motion, even though I knew it was pointless. He's one of Tony's goons and very much pro-ID cards too.

What interested me about this episode was the effort the whips/spin meisters went to before the vote occurred. I happened to be watching the 'Daily Politics' show with Adam on BBC2, this was by chance not design.

All the pundits and analysts said 'It's too close to call, We don't know', they even called in a political betting guru to illustrate the uncertainty the media faced.

If the govt had been within 1-4 votes of winning then I could have understand the whips approach but to lose so convincingly indicates that the spin has really failed this time or that the rebels were playing their own game of spin and made this loss that bit more surprising.

And my MP didn't vote, which is nice. Not as nice as actually voting against but at least he didn't vote for.
