Apr. 30th, 2006 11:30 amWASHINGTON A blistering comedy “tribute” to President Bush by Comedy Central’s faux talk show host Stephen Colbert at the White House Correspondent Dinner Saturday night left George and Laura Bush unsmiling at its close.
Heh.
A couple of highlights...
Colbert, who spoke in the guise of his talk show character, who ostensibly supports the president strongly, urged the Bush to ignore his low approval ratings, saying they were based on reality, "and reality has a well-known liberal bias."Turning to the war, he declared, "I believe that the government that governs best is a government that governs least, and by these standards we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq."

Afghanistan
Mar. 22nd, 2006 08:14 amA Muslim convert to Christianity could face the death penalty in Afghanistan. Abdul Rahman is charged with rejecting Islam and could be executed under Sharia law unless he reconverts
It sounds as if some things haven't changed much since the Taliban days.

Two questions for those of you who take an interest in such things.
Firstly, does anyone know anywhere this side of the Atlantic that still stocks Alaskan Smoked Porter? I haven't seen any for a year or two . :-/
Secondly, on a similar theme - Smokehead single malt whisky. Anyone tried it? Is it worth sampling? I was considering picking up a bottle for Whitby.
Thank'ee...

V for Vendetta - reviews (#2)
Mar. 19th, 2006 01:05 pmFrom the delightful WorldNetDaily:
(Actually, I liked it a lot. Saw it yesterday. Some things they changed for the worse - and I may post about that later - but not bad)
"a vile, pro-terrorist piece of neo-Marxist, left-wing propaganda filled with radical sexual politics and nasty attacks on religion and Christianity"

V for Vendetta - reviews (#1)
Mar. 18th, 2006 10:16 amFrom the San Francisco Chronicle:
"V sets off fireworks around the incinerated building as if it were the Fourth of July"
...as if it were November 5th, surely? (Um, hang on, what date was it again...)
Positive review. That particular line amused me, though.

A little while back I made a fairly blunt post about the BNP's latest leaflet (I'm not a fan, in case you hadn't guessed)
This attracted a couple of anonymous comments from people who thought I was being more than a little unfair to the BNP. The second comment included this:
Five men have been arrested over their alleged role in protests against cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad, Scotland Yard said
The BBC site also shows that Omar Khayam, who dressed as a suicide bomber, "was arrested and recalled to prison" shortly after the protest - he'd been released on licence after serving half his sentence.
Looks like some people may get charged after all, then. So much for the double standard. If people want to argue politics with me, that's fine - however much I disagree with those politics. I do get a little annoyed when people make assumptions and/or opinion replaces fact, though.

I am not in agreement with a lot of the BNP's policies and also find they have no policies in relation to a lot of issues but in answer to their question on the leaflet I know which I find most offensive. I also find it offensive that one image shows a section of people breaking the law and still to this day not one single person has been charged or is ever likely to be.I don't know if anyone's seen this on the BBC website today, but...

About an hour ago, someone pushed the latest BNP leaflet through my letterbox. The "Which do you find offensive?" one, republishing one of the cartoons of Muhammad alongside a photo of the "Muslim demonstrators calling for terrorist attacks on Europe and the 'extermination' of non-Muslims".
The first line of text on the other side of the leaflet states that "a healthy democracy needs cartoonists to poke fun at humourless fanatics"...
...and I suddenly feel the need for some BNP cartoons.

Feb. 25th, 2006 12:09 pmAs some people will already be aware, there's a certain concern about Dubai Ports World taking control of six U.S. ports.
"From our point of view, we don't want foreigners controlling our ports" - Thomas Kean
Fair enough. But the only reason that DP World is in this position is that they've just bought P&O - who already had control of those ports. And P&O was based in London, not American...
