So, RTD is leaving. Steven Moffat will be the new executive producer...

...and pretty much everyone on LJ seems to think this is a good thing. I'm not disagreeing - but just what do you want to see from Moffat's first season? Time for a quick survey, I think...

  • Will he be able to keep the ratings as well as the critical acclaim? I mean, we seem to like his stories - and, by extension, he'll probably take the series in some interesting directions - but will the Saturday evening audience agree?
  • What/who should he change or ditch completely?
  • What/who should be bring back from seasons 1-4 of the new series?
  • What/who should he bring back from the old series - and why?
  • What general guidelines should he always remember?

Sometimes, life just seems to imitate Father Ted. With added turkey...

I've just encountered Ireland's Eurovision entry.

Words... fail me...

Ooops

My mobile phone is safely locked in the desk drawer at work. If you need to contact me tonight, the landline is a better option...

Happy birthday, [personal profile] lurkingcat!

Found via a link on the BBC site. Interesting conversation.

Just after I left the house, I got a phone call telling me not to go to work - I'm working offsite today, and I get a lift from home (but they forgot to mention this until now).

That's left me with an extra ninety minutes. Which has translated into bacon and mushrooms for breakfast, a much-needed cup of tea and a very relaxed morning (so far).

To quote Wikipedia:
"There is no universal rule to distinguish a ship from a boat. Usually, ships are larger than boats. A commonly used rule of thumb is that if one vessel can carry another, the larger of the two is a ship. As dinghies are common on sailing yachts as small as 35 feet (11 m), this rule of thumb is not foolproof.

A number of large vessels are traditionally referred to as boats. Submarines are a prime example. Other types of large vessels which are traditionally called boats are the Great Lakes freighter, the riverboat, and the ferryboat. Though large enough to carry their own boats and heavy cargoes, these vessels are designed for operation on inland or protected coastal waters."

Ships are not a subset of boats, ok? :-)

Another WGW, another batch of quotes from unfortunate goths. Names (and context) are omitted to protect the guilty and help with misinterpretation...

"How will this end, Molari?"
"In fire!"

One working day  'til Whitby.

Heh.

Well, I managed to buy some food today. And a pruning saw. I've levelled almost all of the front garden shrubbery, as well as whatever-it-was that had taken root just outside my back garden gate (stopping me from opening it).

So I must have achieved something. Just not the writing, printing or packing that I meant to do.

Need to pack for Whtiby. Tomorrow.

Dizzee Rascal

(link goes to his MySpace page, with streaming music from latest album 'Maths+English'. Lyrics definitely NSFW)

Winner of the Mercury Prize. One of the leading lights of the UK's Grime scene.

Opinions?

For my part, it's really not something I thought would appeal to me - but having listened to a bit,  I do like the electronic element of the music (especially on Where's Da G's, although it doesn't kick in until some way into the song...)

...but, y'know, if it was then Classic FM Magazine would probably be an awful lot like Kerrang!

This is not intended as a compliment.

Grumpy

I'm still not well. I'm not terribly unwell - just a stinking cold and a head full of cotton wool - but it's enough to make me grumpy and socially maladroit.

I'm not thinking clearly. I'm not listening properly. In conversation, my sentences are clumsy things that stop and start in a random manner. They don't tend to make much sense. They don't tend to have much energy behind them, either. I've lost focus.

Not things I cope well with. I rely on halfway decent communication skills for my job, too. Stupidly, I also turn into more of a stubborn (but muddle-headed) workaholic when I'm in this state - it's harder to get out of the office on time, because I don't organise my day nearly as well, so always end up forgetting something vital... until I'm just about to leave....

Which doesn't help matters.

Whitby next week. I don't actually want to be ill for Whitby, thanks. I want to be energetic, sociable, good company for the people I'm with - and generally filled with the spirit of Fun. This is not looking altogether likely.

Hmph. Enough rambling. Back to the grump.

The Royal Oak, Berkshire

I've seen a number of reviews of this place. All have been very positive.

...I'm just breaking with convention and getting my post-WGW lurgi out of the way first.

I'm feeling vile. I have, however, almost mastered the art of the bow tie - something which has consistently eluded me for the last two decades. Go me. :)

Is there some sort of issue with renaming an LJ account and findng that you've been automatically unfriended by people?

Have just noticed that a number of people have renamed their LJs and are no longer on my friends list, but with no intervention from me...

Edit: Oh, so it's meant to do that? Why?!
