Hugo Awards & Doctor Who...
Aug. 11th, 2008 05:59 pmSteven Moffat does it again - 'Blink' gets a Hugo
It's quite nice to see that Paul Cornell's Human Nature / The Family of Blood got nominated too (I'm not remotely surprised that it did, either...) - and it's good to see that Catherine Treganna's Torchwood episode, Captain Jack Harkness (IMHO the only season one Torchwood episode that really worked), also got a nomination.

Garfunkel's Dog, and other stories
Aug. 10th, 2008 01:46 amToday has featured pimms, small children, moose hugs, pimms, barbecued animal, ice cubes, mushrooms, pimms, discussions about the correct use of language, the chili challenge, songs about the Coventry ring road, daddy monkey's escape bid and many other things besides...
It's been Elaine's birthday and there was a Party. With much silliness.
Time for sleep now.

I quite like that one. Possibly because you can interpret it in a few different ways...
Good morning, world. It's going to be a damn fine day.

Busy, busy, busy...
Aug. 6th, 2008 10:14 pmAre you tired of hearing about gardening yet? :)
No, I haven't been doing any more of it. But I think I need to be. This weekend is
jambon_gris and Elaine's party, next weekend I'm in Bristol, the weekend after that is the bank holiday...
...and if I don't get my act together and get some raised beds put in place, I'm not going to be planting the turnips or kohlrabi that really do need to be planted quite soon...
I see some busy week nights ahead of me. Now, where did I put my trusty spade...? :)

Obscure comics
Aug. 5th, 2008 10:44 pm...just because this bit of news surprised me and I feel the need to share. A while back, Marvel Comics handed over their UK operations to Panini.
I wasn't expecting anything too interesting to come from this, but as well as republishing Marvel's most popular superhero comics for sale at UK newsagents, Panini have been printing collected editions of some of the more interesting Marvel UK comics - things that Marvel themselves have never managed to reprint in collections...
So far, we've had two volumes of early Captain Britain stories (with a third one to follow) and two volumes of Death's Head. Not a bad start - and a very sensible start, if you're looking to gauge interest...
They've just announced their next collection - Dragon's Claws.
I may be the only person who remembers this one. Ten issues of dystopian adventure in the grim 82nd century. The seas have dried, the land is desert and Blackpool's a no-go zone inhabited by gothic psychopaths...
It's not an amazing comic - it definitely had its flaws - but it was good fun and it'll be good to see it back in print.
Now, if they'll just follow that up by reprinting the first run of The Knights of Pendragon, then I'll be really happy... :)

The chives are alive.
Aug. 4th, 2008 07:08 pmThis gardening thing...
I'm not entirely sure I have the patience for it. Or at least not for the first bit - watching a pot full of soil, hoping that sooner or later something green will surface and keep growing...
I'd pretty much given up on the pot of chives that's now sitting on the patio. No signs of life for, oh, at least a week...
The first green tips were visible this evening. Heh. And since they're supposedly a hardy perennial, I shouldn't need to plant any more of 'em for a few years. Well, ok, not unless I kill this batch...

Somewhen in the next two weeks, I'm going to attempt to grow kohlrabi and turnips.
This may go horribly wrong. Alternatively, I may end up trying to offload spare vegetables on friends... :-)
First, though, I need to contruct a couple of raised beds at the end of the garden. This should be fun.
(I'm half-watching the Hungarian grand prix. It's failing to hold my attention...)

Absence of Plan - gig tonight
Aug. 1st, 2008 06:04 pm...accompanied by absence of clue. I'm being disorganised.
It's the Coventry Inkubus Sukkubus gig @ the Tuns tonight - so I shall be turning up to see people and watch bands. That's as far as my plan goes.
However... if time allows, I might wander info the noodle bar a couple of doors down beforehand. I need feeding and they do excellent food. Do other people have any better plans, though?

Zombie meme, from
dmh
Jul. 31st, 2008 11:38 pmYou are in a mall when zombies attack. You have:
1) XM214 Microgun - which seems to be about as close as you can get to Hollywood's beloved minigun...
2) Fields of the Nephilim, "Moonchild".
3) Winston Churchill, or possibly Lucy Liu.
The memes, they're getting sillier...
1. One weapon
2. One song blasting on the speakers
3. One famous person to fight along side you.

A brief moment of comics geekery...
Jul. 31st, 2008 10:18 pmnewuniversal - the Warren Ellis reinvention of Marvel's New Universe concept - was really rather good. Six issues of intriguing plots and very pretty artwork. It's not a million miles away from Heroes, in some ways - something which Warren himself has commented on (the two surfaced at about the same time, iirc).
The second series, newuniversal: shockfront hasn't quite grabbed me in the same way (again, draw your parallels to Heroes here... :) - possibly because the art has changed; possibly because it was a long gap, we've only got two issues out and I'm not yet sure where it's going.
However, we do now have a one-shot special to fill the gap between issues; newuniversal: 1959 is a prequel set in 1959, with just one character from the main series. It also has a rather.. unexpected... guest appearance (I'm surprised it's not on
scans_daily yet!).
It's written by Kieron Gillen, who also wrote the excellent Phonogram, and it's well worth a look.

Weebl's Stuff - Owls!
As pointed out by
deathboy. The best thing I've seen from Weebl's Stuff in a while.
It's only slightly insane.
