The mobile phone's on its last legs - the fully-charged battery ran out after a five minute conversation with [livejournal.com profile] mouseboks the other day and doesn't want to recharge - but after a little investigation, it sounds like it's not actually the battery itself at fault...

Oh well. I'd been thinking about a new phone anyway. Any recommendations for good ones?

I'm thoroughly pleased with my Nokia 6230. Free on most monthly network contracts. This is an all-the-toys phone (video & still camera, MP3 audio player, MPG4 video player, MMC flash memory card up to 1GB [cheap MMC here, recommend PQI branded], Bluetooth, FM radio, Java, EGPRS up to 384kbit/sec) but based on the older, faster, reliable Series 40 operating system which will be familiar to those who have used older Nokia phones such as 3210, 7110, 7210, 6100 etc.

Very small, only 10x4x1cm, and being a non-flip, non-twist phone with no moving parts it is very, very hard wearing. Also interchangable fasicas- although viewed by many as a chav fashion feature, I find interchangable covers very useful as I frequently drop the phone or put it in my pocket with my keys, resulting in scratching/chipping/breaking the cover. Cheap replacement fascias are available from www.mobilefun.co.uk .

My only other advice is to avoid Series 60, Symbian and 3G phones like the plague. They're slow, crash-prone and bulky.

More photos and comments from me here.

I don't use mobile phones myself, but I can certainly say that doing application development for Symbian/Series 60 devices was probably one of the most traumatic programming experiences I ever had.
