Supper today was my very first homegrown apple, a huge Peasgood's Nonsuch.

It's one of those 'dual purpose' varieties - supposed to be good for cooking, but also edible raw.

I can confirm that they are actually quite tasty. Which is probably just as well, as the tree may be big enough to give me more than one apple next year. :-)

Congratulations! Though Peasgood's Nonsuch just makes me realise how badly I would fuck up a 'Heirloom Fruit Or Folk Dance?' quiz.

I suspect it was partly the name that made me pick that particular variety from the list. :-)

I did want a D'Arcy Spice too, or possibly an Alfred Jolibois, but couldn't find the trees so had to settle for an Orleans Reinette instead...

I do like apple variety names. They probably shouldn't be the most important consideration when picking a tree, though :)

(I should possibly have gone for a Wyken Pippin, too - the Coventry orchard where that variety began is a only few hundred yards from the house, the apple trees that were there now replaced by a pub of the same name...)
