Debate day today. The gloves are off and a whole bunch of headlines are attacking Nick Clegg.

Nazi slurs. Dodgy finances. Mud - which usually sticks, right?

But #nickcleggsfault is now a trending topic on Twitter, with increasingly surreal claims parodying today's papers.

So - at least on Twitter - it seems that a lot of people are cynical about the timing and/or truth of these claims. Twitter is self-fuelling and isn't an accurate snapshot of the larger world, but still...

There's a noticeable element of "I think we know what you're trying to do, and why you're doing it today...", isn't there? It may not have backfired, but it's certainly not an unqualified success, either...

The "Nazi slur" is particularly funny! From what I can tell it just seems to be him saying that Braitain got a bit too big for its boots and a bit self important after the war (which I do think is true!). Even the Daily Mail site couldn't spin it to make it look too bad when they quoted what he actually said!

Do I infer from your twittering that you're not going to Whitby? Or merely not going yet...

That's almost certainly his fault, too.

Not going to Whitby. Plotting a 'quiet' birthday celebration in the Midlands instead.

And yes, I did blame Nick Clegg for that in a Tweet earlier today. :)

Hehe yeah! The article he wrote in 2002, though... I think this is the kinda of thing that has always put people off the Lib Dems. And while the puiblic might be wise to the motive for publishing it, it still doesn't change the fact that Cleggy wrote it!
