Sep. 21st, 2009 11:05 pmThe last few months have been busy and expensive. I suspect that's pretty much routine when you're having building work done on your house - but never having had anything on this scale done before, it's fairly new to me (the bathroom was disruptive... but took under two weeks).
Aside from the work itself, there's the fact that I don't have a car. I've been getting more taxis and less buses, simply because I don't seem to have the spare time - I've been up early in the mornings, but leaving the house later than usual anyway, as I've usually ended up discussing things with the builders.
Early evenings have involved rescuing potted plants, moving Stuff to safer locations and trying to arrange food. Later evenings have been skewed by the lack of lighting in some rooms. Everything's been disrupted by the coating of plaster dust on everything. Walking around the bedroom or bathroom barefoot leaves plaster footprints. Mugs, kettles and fridge contents have all acquired a light dusting. Door handles and bannisters never had a hope of avoiding the dust - something that I find especially annoying, in an odd way.
There have been an awful lot of showers. I still feel dusty ten minutes later. On more than one occasion, I've wandered down the road to pester
jambon_gris and/or Elaine for a cup of tea because it meant I was drinking from a proper clean mug, which wouldn't have to be washed up in the bathroom (which has the only working taps in the house...).
And yes, I know I'm moaning. :)
I'm writing this now because it's almost over. Week seven of seven. The builders have finished, more or less. All that's left now are the trimmings - skirting boards, doors and plug sockets. Fittings for the new downstairs toilet. Reconnecting the old appliances (and sink) into the new kitchen, at least temporarily.
Once it's officially finished, I'm going to blitz the place. Top to bottom and back again. Banisters will be scrubbed, as will floors. Everything gets vacuumed at least once. The washing machine and sink are going to see a lot of use. I'm going to spend a little time setting the garden to rights.
And I'm going to have to slow down for a bit, too. That's no bad thing.
I may even manage a few more LJ posts. :)
...and once all that's done, I'm also going to really enjoy cooking my first Sunday roast in the new kitchen. I think that bit may be compulsory.
