Neil Marshall directed Dog Soldiers, a rather good film about a bunch of soldiers who get sent to Scotland - then end up stranded and fighting for their lives...

He also directed Doomsday, a rather less good (but very entertaining) film set in the near future, about a bunch of (mostly) soldiers who get sent on a vital mission to a plague-infested Scotland and end up fighting for... well, I'm sure you get the idea...

His next project, Centurion, is a historical thriller. Care to guess the theme?

Yep.

Three thousand men - the glorious Ninth Legion - are sent into Scotland to deal with the Picts. The Picts do not fight fair. It does not go well for the Romans.

Rotten Tomatoes has a 'sneak peek' video online. Looks interesting.

Yep, he did Descent.

It may or may not have been bloody awful - I think it's very good, although bleak as hell - but it didn't involve Scotland, so doesn't count in this context. :)

I thought The Descent was pretty good too.

I have Doomsday but haven't got round to watching it yet - must do so. :-)

The first half of it was really good; clostriphobic, tightly filmed and suspenseful. The second half was utter drek.

If it had just been about them getting stuck down in the caves, it would have been a good film.

I kinda know where you are going with this. It came highly recomended to me and i thought there were good parts but overall a bit of a let down....Particularly the last 5 minutes where it just went up its own arse and got lost while trying to be clever.

I have never seen a less convincing bunch of monsters. "Why, yes, they've 'evolved' in the dark to be blind but strangely their senses of hearing and smell are still so mind-blowingly awful that they can crawl directly over two panicing women without noticing!"

They were so laughable that it robbed the film of anything involving quality.

These are probably spoilers. My advice to anyone considering watching it: turn it off after 40 minutes.

Is that the one with lesbian werewolves underground in caves - or is someone pulling my leg? It's on my list of films to watch, anyhow

Ish....Definately underground caves. Some form of nasty creatures. Group of women going caving off the beaten track....Think its a bit light on the lesbian aspect though.

Hmm, I now have the urge to re-read Rosemary Sutcliff's The Eagle of the Ninth again.

Doomsday was a waste of celluloid. And Malcolm MacDowell.

Doomsday was a great fun flick....Well worth seeing in a cinema or with an awesome sound set-up as its a cheesy 80's style throw away action flick...mad max 2 in scotland with a virus element.

Not seen dog soliders but want to as i have heard good things.
