Not killing the green things...
Mar. 1st, 2009 05:58 pmMuch to my surprise, the herbs seem to have survived the winter.
In some cases, this may have been a fairly close thing - until this weekend saw the first shoots from the lovage and the horseradish, I had been wondering. And there's still scope for something horrible to happen to the sweet marjoram or french tarragon, both of which look a little wobbly at the moment...
...but, basically, I still have a herb garden. And I'm still not sure what to do with it. Until the outbuildings are knocked down and the kitchen extension's done, it's going to be awkward to find a place for them in the garden. Putting them next to the tool shed risks trampling by builders... or would look a bit odd once the tool shed' s knocked down.
I've also got a second batch of herbs to plant soon - annuals and a few perennials I didn't pick up last year. Oh, and some lemon-scented catnip... :)
Hmm. This needs some planning.
I also need to think about just what I'm planting this year. A selection of bulbs have gone into the front garden - but the back garden was always intended to have some vegetables, and I've not really got my act together on that yet...

Date: 2009-03-02 10:37 pm (UTC)I ended up with a large selection of jerky, a bottle of Camlann's Xmas Tipple and a copy of The Road to Vindaloo (a history of Anglo-Indian food).
I'm still not sure I'd want to take up reenacting, but I do find a lot of the things at the markets fascinating - the early hand cannon replicas, for example, which aren't reproduced as ornaments (or referenced in fiction) in the same way that later guns are, but I do find quite interesting to look at...

Date: 2009-03-02 11:20 pm (UTC)That sounds fascinating - I'll have to see if I can pick up a copy (although the title strikes me as being slightly misleading, given that vindaloo is Portugese-Indian...).
I've had a go at firing a replica hand cannon, and they're surprisingly accurate, at least at relatively short ranges. Definitely very different to more modern styles of fire-arms, though.
Rather annoyingly, it was only when I was halfway home that I remembered I hadn't got any of the jerky - at least he turns up at a good number of the events themselves, so I should be able to pick up some more fairly shortly.
