Cool, you did a very similar tour to the one we did except that we went all the way around Iceland, up to Myvatn and Akueyri and to the high cliff with the puffin colony in the Northwest.
Yeah, we very much did most of the "standard" tours, as we were lacking in time (we only were there four nights). The trip to Vík and across the south was an entire day job, though!
During the day, especially a dull cloudy day, it's rather less impressive because it's just grey stone and concrete but it is an impressive structure. Too bad we couldn't hang around til nightfall (which would have been around 11:00 when we were there). Iceland is fantastic and best explored in a motorhome, even better if it's based on a rugged 4x4 because as soon as you leave the ring road you'll have to deal with really bad roads and fords. I hope to get a scanner with film adapter at some point so I can scan my old photos from then ('92).
Watch out for Nazgul when you visit, won't you? I love that some cultures actually *build* this mad shit instead of it just existing in the darker graphic novel/fantasy film genre. (Gaudi! Barcelona!)
Ooh, when I went to Iceland I stayed in a hotel just across the way from that! Definitely best seen by night. I'd love to go back to Rekjavic - it's such a fab place!
