07/07/06 - ramblings
Jul. 7th, 2006 11:26 pmSo, here we are. One year on.
Two weeks after the bombings we had attempted bombings - no casualties, no explosions.
We've since had a police anti-terrorism operation go badly wrong, leading to the death of an innocent man. More recently, another anti-terrorism raid ended up with police shooting a man in his own house, then eventually releasing him without charge.
We've had badly designed anti-terrorism laws, rushed through by the government.
We've had Tony Blair tell the muslim community that it's not just a case of stamping out violent extremism - he also dismissed criticism of Iraq and other foreign policy issues as a "completely false sense of grievance against the West", making it clear that he felt there was nothing to debate.
As was written at the time, we have indeed "told a better class of bastard to fuck off". If July 7th was intended to be the start of a sustained campaign of terror then either the police have improved a lot since the Provisional IRA were planning attacks or the remaining terrorists aren't quite so competent.
Let us remember all those who died. Never let us forget what this country is supposed to stand for. Let us work towards making the UK - and the world - a safer place. And let's also continue to live our day-to-day lives as normal, without allowing the shadows and rumours of terror to scare us into making mistakes.
