Michael Howard is now a "lame duck" Conservative leader and should quit immediately, one of the party's leading financial backers has said

I didn't ever expect to say this, but: Howard knows what he's doing. Please shut up. you aren't helping.

I don't like his policies much, but right now he does actually seem to have the best interests of his party at heart.

While Tony Blair now seems to be staying on at least partly because he wants his place in history, Howard's said why he's stepping down and has (correctly) said the Conservatives ought to review how they choose their leaders, as the current system hasn't been working too well. That's something that's pretty much common knowledge.

So how about being constructive and getting on with that - so that it'll be a little less farcical than the last three leadership contests - and then I'm sure he'll be only too happy to help with a smooth transition of power, ok?

*sigh* Having said all that, I don't exactly want a revitalised Conservative party, of course. But still...

Personally I hope they all start fighting each other again - it will be immense fun!

Also, they should definitely leave the decision on the leader to the overall party membership - bring back IDS, that's what I say!
