A small discreet notice on the WGW website says:

"As of 01/01/02 Cheeky Monkey is closed. Thanks for all of your support over the past few years."

I can't say I'm surprised. As with Nightbreed, it never quite made the transition to online sales. There's something weirdly appropriate about the two closing almost simultaneously, too.

The difference between Nightbreed and Cheeky Monkey is that Nightbreed also ran a record label, whereas AFAIK none of the money from Cheeky Monkey was reinvested in WGW. I'm surprised that with the number of geeks in the goth scene neither of them took that much advantage of the power of the Internet. Hell, I could have knocked up a computerised system for Shitebreed in a week that would have worked far better than their heap-of-junk website...

I'm a lot more upset about the loss of Nightbreed than I am about Cheeky Monkey, mostly because Nightbreed had more varied music to offer, whereas Cheeky Monkey seemed to concentrate on more 80s pop and band-of-the-moment stuff from reading their catalogue. Ah well, I suppose it means there's more sales going to Resurrection, and their record label has IMHO a stronger lineup so could use more support...
