Three words in particular, actually: Work In Progress
We had a very pleasant Monday night in there - didn't stay all night, but long enough to soak up some beer and some atmosphere. And both were pretty good. For a start, it's great to see Bill and Ian (and the rest of the Whitefriars mob) running somewhere new. And it's almost as good to see so many of the old WF crowd turning up to see what the place is like...
Having said that, they are still working on the place. The walls are newly painted, the benches are paint-spattered and a bit tatty, the gents are moderately scary and the layout is spacious... perhaps a bit too spacious in places, now that the pool tables are gone. And, of course, the signs still claim it's the Beer Engine. But all of this is being dealt with.
As for the beer... well, a lot of the pumps were still out of action, but the ones that weren't included some very pleasant Black Sheep and the Greene King IPA. More good beer to come, I think. The chilled cabinet behind the bar was well stocked, though - Judas, a few different Mort Subite fruit beers, a few other interesting looking bottles and some Bitberger.
As it stands, it's nice... but not quite as nice as the Windmill or the Malt Shovel. And definitely not up there with Whitefriars or the Nursery Tavern just yet... and "just yet" is the key bit here. I can see it getting very good indeed, given a few more weeks and a little more work - and it's going to be interesting calling back and seeing just how it's changed.
