Leipzig: Sunday
Jun. 8th, 2004 01:06 pmYes, I'm still playing catch-up with the Leipzig reports. Almost there now, though...
Sunday was another day that didn't quite go according to plan. I was originally intending to see lots of bands and be generally enthusiastic. It was a nice idea, at least. What actually happened was this:
I got up. That was harder than it sounds.
davefish and I wandered down to breakfast, collecting Karen on the way. There were other people at breakfast. Some of them were conscious. None of us, except possibly
davefish, were perky.
After breakfast, we found ourselves sucked back into NBC, CNN and MTV. CNN was hosting a spirited political debate between two senators, while MTV had a rather disturbing 'dating' show, a twist on Blind Date where their contestant had to choose his date from three candidates by searching their houses, without seeing them (all photos were removed from the house) before he made his choice. It started a little bit crass and creepy, becoming quite amusing when they turned the tables on him by letting the three women watch his searches on video and then go through his house. Especially amusing to see that MTV felt they had to censor the "sex, beer and drugs " poster on his bedroom wall...
davefish investigated the hotel swimming pool, and came back with a positive report.
Sloth still had me in its grasp. The original plan was to go to the Schauspielhaus for Dark Sanctuary and Daemonia Nymphe... but that didn't quite happen. Instead we ended up at the Agra, where
bunnyp had discovered guarana wine and one of the stalls was selling a dangerously drinkable red mead...
More shopping was involved. We ran into
chimera_s, as well as
dave_exile and a whole host of other ppeople. There was a trip to the viking market, including a long chat to a British stallholder and a search for food...
It's all a bit of a blur. Eventually, though, we somehow ended up at the Moritzbastei. I'd not actually seen any bands there before - it's a very atmospheric venue, hidden behind one of the many bars within the fortress. The open section of the Moritzbastei isn't actually that big, but it's still easy to get lost... especially if, like me, you don't initially realise that there are two central courtyards with steps up to the outside world, not one...
First band up were Dust Heaven, from Ukraine. They rocked. Best band I saw all weekend, in fact - possibly that's because I wasn't expecting them to be so good, but even so.... they're a trio, female vocals plus two keyboardists (who also performed on the first day, in their other incarnation as Gray/Scale. Perky upbeat music, great stage presence, vocals in English and Russian. They got an encore - which is almost unheard of for an opening band at the WGT...
Then we had In Mitra Medusa Inri, which had
_gh0st_'s evil twin providing the vocals. They were, as ever, good. Some of the new stuff didn't grab me, and the sound started off a little rough, but by the end all that had worked out and it was another great show.
...and then we wandered out for a drink and a trip to the merchandise stand. Only to realise that the flood of people heading in meant it would be full in seconds and that we hadn't a hope of seeing any more bands there. Bah.
So we decided to grab seats and be social for a bit, aided and abetted by some drinks. They serve good hot lemon drinks in the cafe bar. Which prompted one German goth at the other end of the table to ask if I was Danish, as I seemed far too healthy and clean-living ("what, no booze!", or words to that effect). He's obviously not met any of the Danes I know. :)
We also got a rather nice fire show on the other side of the courtyard, glimpsed out of the window - much twirling and juggling up on top of the Moritzbastei, accompanied by the ubiquitous Vivus Temporis. Er, and someone dropping a firestaff into the courtyard, which confused the poor bloke who picked it up... he didn't know how to put it out, and couldn't really move it anywhere as he seemed worried that he'd set fire to one of the table umbrellas...
After that... we lurked. We ran into
_sarnandsynara_, who inherited our table and made strange promises about t-shirt slogans. Then we drifted to the Moritzbastei's cocktail bar, discovered Mandy and Adrian already there, and chatted for a bit. The "captain morgan" chocolate/rum alcoholic milkshake is highly recommended.
We made it home eventually, after running into more of the usual suspects and chatting for even longer. In this context "eventually" was about 3:30AM. Thankfully, the Moritzbastei is only a short walk from the hotel... by this point I'd pretty much emptied my reservoirs of perk.
Still. There was only one more day to go. How much perk could that possibly need? Famous last words, I think...
