Whitby - part 1
Nov. 7th, 2003 05:16 pmWednesday:
Gathered goths in Coventry, filled
mrbear's car with aforementioned
goths and *far* too much luggage, then headed North.
This Whitby, our official mascot was (of course) a small feline finger puppet,
mr_oberon. I can offer no coherent explanation for this. But it made sense at the time.
We made pretty good time travelling, for once, arriving before 2PM. Perhaps this was a little *too* early, as there were already a couple of familiar faces (plus a heap of luggage) outside the B&B - our landlady wasn't expecting us so soon, so we had to wait a little while before she arrived to let us in. Just as well it wasn't raining.
Eventually got in, deposited belongings and gradually accumulated even more goths. Wandered down to the off licence by the Granby and invested in a bottle of Green Chartreuse and some interesting looking wine.
The rest of the day was split between the Elsinore and a rather nice meal at the Indian restaurant by the station (warning: their lime pickle is really quite brutal!). Completely failed to make it to Creamy - was it any good?
Vaguely recall feeding BBQ worms and chocolate-coated scorpions to some Elsinore people (mostly poor unsuspecting Camgoths). Bless http://www.edible.com and all its works. :)
Soundtrack: The Darkness, Deathboy
Drink of choice: Strongarm
Thursday:
I don't clearly remember Thursday. It happened, and I'm sure I do remember all the component parts, I just have trouble fitting them into any kind of coherent sequence.
I think all of us made it to breakfast. This is a rare occurrence.
Made it to the spa and exchanged my ticket for a wristband. There was then much confusion about gold vs. blue bands, just what they meant and whether we'd all left with the correct colour...
Ran into Lars (yet another ex-Cov goth) and vaguely arranged to try to gather Covgoths for food/booze at some point over the weekend. Had a pleasant lunch at the Resolution (or wasthat Friday? it all blurs...) - cheap, very edible, fast service.
Was mildly surprised/confused by the layout changes to the spa, but the Coventry Recon team had grabbed a table before I arrived, so that was ok...
Deathboy were at their best, a great start to the evening. Hadn't heard their finale "80s are dead" before - works well, namechecks
mickmercer, deeply sarcastic. Yup, like that one. Was vaguely hoping we'd get "Mad World" as a WGW cover, though. Got a few photos.
F&TM were blindingly good, although I the extended set-up time was a bit annoying - especially as I'd grabbed a spot at the very front and was stuck there. Got lots of photos, bounced to 'Running up that hill' and 'Relic song', enjoyed muchly.
Missed IS completely, although I heard good things about the show (and, from at least one person, enraged rantage about the "blatant product placement bollocks") over the next few days.
Soundtrack: Killing Miranda & the Cruxshadows
Drinks of choice: Strongarm, Red
Friday:
One down at breakfast, seemingly due to food poisoning! This was poor Carmen, a doctor was called, and she thereafter spent the bulk of WGW in bed. Not good.
Lunch at the White Horse & Griffin with assorted good people. Excellent food, lovely atmosphere, good wine and all sorts of fun with chocolate fondue.
Managed to tour the bazaar without actually buying anything. Scary.
Failed to get in touch with Lars and arrange a covgoth meeting.
Again, didn't dress up *too* much for the spa - was planning on bouncing, so went for something practical. Tried to grab dinner (with
imago and
snow_leopard) at the Granby on our way down - didn't quite go according to plan, as meals ordered a 6PM didn't arrive until 7PM. Good, but very heavy/filling
steak & kidney pie - and they seem to think that veg stroganoff should be served with crisps? Anyway, ate meal and dashed for the spa...
All Living Fear were pretty good. Sounded a lot better at the front than at the back, though - the interesting guitar bits didn't seem to travel too well. Not quite the best I've seen them, and it was a shame that we didn't get a duet for Stranger To None ('cos that worked really well at Club Noir), but good stuff.
Chaos Engine were apocalyptic, unstoppable and probably my favourite show of the weekend. All the best songs, a great performance,
markeris doing his mad rapper thang and even a stage invasion at the end. Works for me.
Missed Wayne Hussey due to the lure of the lobby. Judging from the good things I've heard since, this may have been a mistake. Still, it meant I was slightly less broken on Saturday morning...
Soundtrack: You know, I really can't remember...
