Not drowning but waving
Oct. 3rd, 2001 02:29 pmMonday was the long-planned "Coventry lads night out" at Spellbound. Which, once we'd lost a few Wwk folk (and Ant), basically boiled down to me, DMH and Iain. Which meant it was actually a more-or-less normal night out, and rather less awful than it could have been... :)
I still think Spellbound's weird, though. It's possibly the least chatty goth night I've ever been to. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it and the music's great - and it's usually packed - but it doesn't seem to have the social whirl aspect, at least not for me. I'm really not sure why, either. I probably know more people there than I do at, say, Exile or The Calling, I just don't seem to manage to talk to them. Everyone sits in their alcove chatting to the people they turned up with, or dances - there's not a lot of mingling going on.
Oh, and I was properly told off by Margaret for not returning her Morph-in-a-floppy-hat photo. I didn't think she'd be there (I've not seen her for about six months...), so it didn't occur to me to bring it along. Ooops. Next time.
And Tuesday was Damnation. Or, more accurately, Tuesday was me staggering in from work, going straight to bed, and being woken by the noise of Andy wandering into the house, about three hours later. I eventually staggered downstairs, at about 9:30PM.
"Oh", said Andy, "Dimitri phoned. Damnation's on tonight after all, GothSoc are turning up in force, he's DJing a set, and can you bring some goth CDs along so he's got something to play".
I wouldn't have minded being woken up for that call. As it was, I grabbed what CDs I could and headed towards the Campbell on the next bus. They've redecorated, btw. It's still garish - but now it's garish and shiny instead of garish and slightly crumbly.
And Dimitri's set went rather well. Cruxshadows, Inkubus Sukkubus, NMA, VNV, Killing Miranda, March Violets, Virgin Prunes, Siouxsie and a few other highlights. Finishing with a full dancefloor for In Strict Confidence's "Zauberschloss". The GothSlot is now a regular feature again, so I guess that's a success... :)
[Sidenote to
gothslut - I think Cambridge poached our allocation of cute goth freshers this year, though. We've seen no goth freshers at all, in fact. Well, either that or they're not coming out to play yet... :-( ]
The other "highlight" of the evening was that the Campbell now stocks 'Blue' - a new 'chilling' drink from whoever-it-is that produces 'Red'. Needless to say, the goth contingent took all of ten minutes to buy lots of both, hijack some pint glasses and mix them together into 'Purple', a strange tasting concoction with a dim future ahead of it... :)
