You know the really scary thing? I can't tell where the trolls stop and the sincere crazies start. I know that the people most likely to respond early on are the ones most likely to spout extremist crap without checking facts, but, still...

Jesus, that's rather frightening. I read on the BBC that people are already making death threats to Americans who happen to be Palastinian decent. It's fear isn't it, the fear of knowing that someone can sneak up behind you, kill thousands of your people and you won't know what's hit you until the bombs go off. I would never have thought it possible in the modern West. They give you the impression you are safe and untouchable.

Fear, yes, and the lack of a known attacker.

People want an enemy nation or ethnic group to blame, a large and stationary target, because they actually know how to hit back against that...

The possibility that this was done by a couple of dozen determined fanatics with craft knives, off-the-shelf flight manuals and some careful planning... that must be a very intimidating thought for Americans. The implication is that all it takes to kill thousands of American civilians, to do such appalling damage, is a handful of cunning people with a grudge, prepared to go to the ultimate extreme. No "rogue state". No shadowy worldwide conspiracy. Just people.
