Lazy Friday
Jun. 21st, 2002 05:24 pmToday has a theme, and that theme is beer. It's the annual Wwk Uni Sci-Fi Soc (and ex-SF Soc) Coventry pubcrawl. Be afraid. I'm tagging along, despite the fact that I was never a member of the SF soc (and, for that matter, never attended Wwk Uni. It's that sort of gathering). Somehow, I seem to have become the token sober responsible adult. This wasn't in the plan.
So far...
We gathered at the Old Dyers Arms at 10, for breakfast. And beer.
[Jack and a couple of friends had already been drinking since 7 - they'd found a pub that opened half an hour before the England game started. Mad, I tell you, mad...]
Followed by, er, some pub I've already forgotten the name of. Not somewhere I've been before. Started with an 'A'. More beer.
Then on to the Windmill for lunch. And beer.
Followed by Old Orleans, for cocktails (Virgin Mary, in my case. See - told you I was the token responsible adult :). And then Inspire, for a bottle of Sapporo and some coffee (I skipped the Sapporo).
Currently, they're all shooting each other in Lazerquest games. Then it'll be back to another pub. There was a small shopping trip to Forbidden Planet (and a cigar run) in there, too.
I'm rather enjoying this. Just the right mix of goth/geek/ cultural spoddery & drunken cameraderie. And since England lost the football, the fans are fading away from the pubs, too.
Right now. Where was I? Oh yes. About to go out and resume festivities. Back later

Between the Dyers and the Windmill? Er, the Butts Retreat? The Bowling Green? The Aardvaak (as I believe the old Hen and Chickens is now called)? *Bah* to nouveau pseudo-pubs with their quirky names, that's what I say.

Date: 2002-06-24 04:46 am (UTC)We used to go there regularly, particularly to their Tuesday quiz nights. But I went off it mainly because the beer is so awful (if I'm reduced to drinking bottles it must be bad, and why go to a pub if you've got to drink bottled crap?). Also, the landlord is a wanker; apparently some male friends of mine were there one night getting pretty pissed and they were getting a little physically affectionate with each other (they're all straight, afaik, so not that affectionate!) and the landlord told them 'don't come back, I don't want your sort in here'. Which seemed a pretty good reason for me not to go back and give the man my money for his wretched so-called beer.
