There goes the weekend...
Mar. 13th, 2011 11:15 pm...and it's been a pretty good one.
Friday night was a chance to catch up with friends, sit around setting the world to rights and eat curry. Which is a pretty good combination, at least in my book. The sort of evening where we meant to watch a DVD or two, but the conversation kept the evening alight and somehow we never got around to it.
Saturday daytime mostly involved shopping, gardening (as mentioned in the previous post, I now have a kiwi plant - and also a pot of 'Stella D'Oros' daylillies) and tidying the house - with varying degrees of success.
As for Saturday night, that was supposed to be a trip to a 40s event in Nuneaton, which had been recommended by friends - a chance for dancing, plus live music from Madeline Brown and a buffet, for the ridiculously low price of £3 per ticket.
As it happened, Ms Brown had to cancel due to illness - but was replaced by a friend. So instead of 40s songs, we got a set of 50s ratpack numbers (including Ain't That A Kick In The Head, which I'm sure I'll always associate with its use in Fallout: New Vegas...) - plus a second, rather eclectic set, with everything from Queen covers to Mack The Knife.
...so, um, possbly less in keeping with the theme of the event, but personally I tend to prefer the 50s stuff to the WWII Vera Lynn standards anyway, especially if I'm dancing to 'em. And there was indeed much dancing. :)
And Sunday's also been very pleasant. Lunch was sauteed chicken and celery - one of those by-the-book recipes, tried for the first time, that wasn't quite what I was expecting. Possibly just because I don't think of celery as filling or warming, and the end result (with a little bit of kick from some garlic and a splash of vermouth) certainly was. The sort of lunch that encourages you to spend the next hour or so in a comfy chair.
I'm starting to believe that Nigel Slater can do no wrong. Or at least that exhaustive testing takes place before the recipes end up in print. On the downside, I've mostly destroyed my copy of Tender (vol 1) in the year that I've had it - the spine's about to give way. Which doesn't say much for the production quality, but is definitely a compliment, of sorts. :)
...and yeah, just saw the final Being Human. That was quite something. Still wondering if we'll get a season 4 and - if so - where the dynamic will go from here. Definitely liked seasons 2 and 3, though...
