Not before mid september or you'll fry in the heat, wilt in the humidity (Flornece is paticularly bad), get eaten by mosquitos and be swamped by tourists. Suggest beginning mid october, when the weather is usually sunny but the temperature pleasantly mild by Brit standards. Later good still, but beware of Christmas mayhem and catholic festivals (as they usually coincide with big tourist migrations: 2nd november is all hallows, 8th dec is Immaculate conception.
If you can don't miss Uffizi in Firenze, especially if you appreciate Renaissance paintings and Tiziano and Raffaello in particular.
Thanks! Late September or early October is sounding good.
I was at a loose end for holidays this year so decided to take a chance on a charity auction on eBay.
I ended up winnning a meal at a very nice restaurant in Siena (Ristorante Il Canto - http://www.certosadimaggiano.com )... which is a perfectly good reason to go visit somewhere I wanted to visit anyway.
(My sister lived in Florence for a little while and I never got the chance to visit while she was there...)
