Weekends and stuff...
Aug. 2nd, 2009 10:18 pmLife's been relatively busy recently. I'm currently a
mrph of little brain, though, and my memory's not really organised enough to do the proper write-up I'd intended to post. So here's some rambling instead...
The weekend before last featured a trip down to London with Elaine (WINOLJ) to see Wicked, which was great fun. I'm not sure I've ever actually seen a 'proper show' before, but it sounds like we ended up at one of the better ones - Alexia Khadime, who played Elphaba, has a great voice, and the staging was suitably shiny and dramatic. The Apollo Victoria's a lovely place, too - I'm not sure I'd ever been there before, but it looks old and grand, a little bit art deco (especially the pillars).
The show was preceeded by a very pleasant, civilised and ever-so-faintly odd lunch at Il Convivio, just round the corner. I'd seen positive things written about it online and it's Michelin-listed (but not starred), so it seemed like a nice place to start the afternoon. As our train was a little bit delayed, I phoned when we arrived to say that we were running just a little bit late - they mentioned that this wasn't a problem at all. We got there and wandered in - and they immediately knew who we were - it seemed we were the only people who'd made a reservation. In fact, we were the only people there for lunch at all...
That shouldn't be taken as a criticism - the food and service were both great, and I think it's a safe bet that we got the best seats in the house (just under the glass roof, which they opened for us once it was clear that the weather was going to stay warm and tranquil).
Last weekend was a little quieter - catching up with
mister_jack, drinking some of Brew Dog's finest, watching the grand prix and doing a bit of gardening.
This weekend's not really been quiet at all -
jambon_gris , Elaine, Nic and i went down to V-Movie on Friday, which was great fun, but did mean that we didn't get back to Coventry (and sleep...) until about 5am. There was much dancing. And also much vodka. Yesterday morning didn't really happen in my life, as you can imagine - last night was intended to be a barbecue until the weather intervened, so got swapped for a pleasantly sociable night in with the usual suspects - plus pizza, chatter and DVDs.
Today has mostly involved churchgoing and gardening. I appear to have acquired a blackcurrant bush, and Nic and
lostdreamer666 have helped me flatten a bit more of the garden.... it's almost looking like a proper garden now, not a jungle. :)

Date: 2009-08-03 11:34 am (UTC)I love the Apollo, too. I've seen Starlight Express there and also Bombay Dreams. My only issue is with leg room, and I'm only an ickle wickle person, so I can only imagine the knee ache for someone your height.

Date: 2009-08-03 07:50 pm (UTC)I've heard some faint praise for the sequels, too. As a stageshow, though... yep, I liked that. :)
Legroom wasn't ideal for me (and probably not for Elaine, either), but the interval gave me some recuperation time. And I do fold up quite small.
