Alas, I feel it was expediency rather than morals. Better imprison, than create another martyr, to paraphrase the jurors' statement.

yes, although to be honest, it is encouraging even to see a US institution make a sensible decision in terms of pragmatics. (though predictably the govt and most of the media were far too consumed with the desire for revenge to be swayed by such concerns)
