As whitby is a community, it doesn't work quite the same way for friends - I can't add friends for it. It sounds like what you actually want is to join it as a member, so that you can see any 'friends only' (effectively 'members only') posts in it?

If so, you can do that by clicking the join link on the Whitby info page - it's an open community, so that's automatic.
