mrph: (Arucard)

Sometimes starting at the end is no bad thing. Over the last week or so I've seen large chunks of Hellsing (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mrbear, who bought thw DVD set... :) and I like it a lot - despite watching the last couple of episodes (where a lot of brutal and nasty things happen to regular characters) first. Actually, possibly that's one more reason why I like it - I knew from the start that they hadn't bungled the ending... :)

It's got style. It's got weirdness. It's got a vampire called 'Arucard' with a wide-brimmed hat, custom-made guns and a very strange attitude. And it's got the sort of bizarre factual errors you get when the Japanese write a series set in London and Birmingham...

What more can you ask?

I think it may have one or two of them, too. Although probably not in the dubious ways you're thinking...

Arucard? Is this like some sort of obvious Dracula name with stereotypical oriental phoneme confusion?

Strangely enough. Yes.

Aie!

Arucard! Scary avatar overlap from a guy on the NWN server I play on.

As [livejournal.com profile] mrbear said, yes. Although the 'stereotypical oriental phoneme confusion' seems to have been a deliberate choice by the Japanese creators. Which is odd.

The Dark Horse manga does actually spell it as Alucard, but they might be trying to make sure that the reader doesn't miss the point :)

Perhaps I might be of some assistance... the name isn't Arucard, it's Alucard. As word games go, working out what this one means is not the hardest task...

Well, no. But I've seen conflicting reports about which of the two spellings it's supposed to be. The ADVision DVD sub says "Arucard", as does their website - I've seen a couple of website explain that Alucard is the better romanisation (especially given the source of the name), but that the original anime & manga is Arucard...

So generally, it seems to be a bit of a mess. :)

It seems to be a bit contentious and confused (see comment below). Ah well...

Hellsing is pretty cool, indeed. Only caught bits and pieces on German TV when I was home in summer, though.

Good to meet you last night, have friended you.
