Right to vote for women in uk: 1928
Right to vote for women in France: 1945
Right to vote for women in Switzerland: 1971 (yes, 1971!)
Universal sufferage in USA: 1965 (date of Voting Rights Act)

These are all within living memory!

Yes, but Kuwait still seems out of step with the rest of the world. Including the rest of the Middle East.

Women have been able to vote in Syria and Lebanon since the 1950s, Yemen in 1967, Jordan since 1974. I keep seeing references to Kuwait as "one of only two countries" there that still denies women the right to vote.

oh, I'm not saying Kuwait is good, its just that I think we all forget how ghastly most countries have been until very recently. Iceland seems to have been pretty good for the best part of a millenium, but its an exception.

I think the scandinavians in general were very good as far democracy is concerend, and I think finland was the first true democray i.e. 1 adult = 1 vote without proviso, in kewaite there are so many provisos that its hardly a deomcracy anyway, I belive that less than 10% of Kuwati residents actually have the vote, much the sam way as it was in the UK for a long time.

I think Lichtenstein (or one of the other tiny European states) also still doesn't let women vote. Or if they do, it's a very recent thing.
