This is interesting. An American government report on Pinochet, declassified by the Clinton administration, has just reappeared, released by the current Bush administration in a partially censored form - it's not entirely clear from the news story whether or not the Bush administration knew that the document had already been released in full.

What is clear is that the "classified" information in this document - not deemed fit for the public to see - is things such as the description of Pinochet as "Very honest, hard working, dedicated. A devoted, tolerant husband and father; lives very modestly".

There's no secret information there... just an assessment that might prove a little embarrassing with hindsight. Which makes you wonder why that statement's been classified by the current administration - and just what policy is at work there - doesn't it?
