newuniversal - the Warren Ellis reinvention of Marvel's New Universe concept - was really rather good. Six issues of intriguing plots and very pretty artwork. It's not a million miles away from Heroes, in some ways - something which Warren himself has commented on (the two surfaced at about the same time, iirc).
The second series,
newuniversal: shockfront hasn't quite grabbed me in the same way (again, draw your parallels to Heroes here... :) - possibly because the art has changed; possibly because it was a long gap, we've only got two issues out and I'm not yet sure where it's going.
However, we do now have a one-shot special to fill the gap between issues;
newuniversal: 1959 is a prequel set in 1959, with just one character from the main series. It also has a rather.. unexpected... guest appearance (I'm surprised it's not on
scans_daily yet!).
It's written by Kieron Gillen, who also wrote the excellent
Phonogram, and it's well worth a look.
