The WGW report
May. 1st, 2002 07:48 pmYes, it was a good Whitby this time. I had a good time, I think the rest of the Cov/Bristol mob had a good time, and an awful lot of alcohol was consumed...
WEDNESDAY - An utterly chaotic morning. Odie had originally planned to leave at noon, but as he was up bright and early he decided we should set off at 10:30 instead. This meant that my last minute packing got a little bit hasty...
Got to Whitby at 2PM, checked into the B&B, discovered that I'd forgotten to pack any trousers and consequently went on a shopping spree in Pandemonium. Then settled into the Elsinore for beer and crisps - I was surprised to see how quiet it gets on Wednesday, as in total there were about 25 people visible, split between the Elsinore and the Little Angel. Aside from Odie and Vixen, the only familiar faces seemed to be
tals, Triz and Captain M...
THURSDAY - happy birthday to me. A lot of cider was involved, accompanied by occasional doses of mead and some gorgeous single-cask whisky. I took up residency in the Elsinore, saw far too many wonderful people, got very drunk and generally had a great time. Thanks are owed to more people than I can list here, but special mention goes to
cat_and_loki and
aldric, for turning up with a huge birthday cake...
FRIDAY -
ijw looked like a zombie at breakfast. So did
dmh. This became a running joke over the weekend...
The bands were, for the most part, good. Arkam Asylum really aren't my thing, but everyone else held my attention. And Synthetic deserved to win. Several weird conversations with Mark Eris occurred.
SATURDAY - more fun at the bazaar. Evil T-shirt schemes. Doomsday devices. Moderate quantities of beer.
Well, ok, moderate quantities of beer until I started drinking & talking comics with
mrbear at the B&B. We got somewhat slaughtered on Chimay, Chartreuse and mead.
This didn't stop the CovGoth recon team from seizing an impressive four tables in the spa. We're good at this. We've had a lot of practice.
Top sets from JLA, Passion Play ("hey, they're not the real Passion Play - they're moving!") and Manuskript. The cover of Amadeus was a work of warped genius. And I'm just glad that
mrbear didn't have a camera that night. Paradise Lost sounded good, but I was tired by that point, and drifted out into the lobby to wibble at people. Someone attempted to sell my trousers on ebay.
dmh started asking people if they had 'arsecramp'. It all got a bit surreal...
SUNDAY - food, beer, food, beer.
imago and the Leipzig mob, all of whom are wonderful people, bought me a birthday lunch in the White Horse and Griffin. It was a very good (and long) lunch, and it came as a wonderful surprise. Then spent a little while trying to work out what was up with the 80s night, acquired tickets and settled into the Elsinore for a bit, chatting to
coracaskia, Davefish, Liz, Dott,
ciphergoth,
giolla, John Sullivan, a small blue Cthulhu,
gothslut, Natasha, Taoist and all sorts of other ne'er-do-wells. One of those weird moments when the place seemed to be full of familiar faces.
Then off for a quick change, and back out to the 80s night. I didn't stay all night, but I had great fun while I was there. Stuff started happening, though, and my ankles were suffering, so I decided to retire to the Elsinore instead - and then spent the rest of the evening chatting to Cam/Cov/Keele goths. Which was fun.
MONDAY - up and out, bright and early. Well, at least in theory. Actually, we ended up going via Java and the Elsinore (at which point I probably wedged my foot firmly in my mouth - apologies to the relevant people. Hindsight is a wonderful thing). Then we headed back, detouring via Keele for rather longer than planned. After that, there was chocolate cake, loud music and brain-free wibblings. And sleep. Much sleep
