There are always several possible motives for kind-hearted folks "pouring oil on troubled waters".

Some of them are sincere, some of them are just a bit more cynical. Just PR moves with no feeling behind them. "See, I'm trying to play nice, she's the one being unreasonable..."

And, of course, sometimes it's purely a set-up, spreading the metaphorical oil as preparation, so someone can then drop a match and torch it at a later date.

I'm not a trusting soul today.
