Oh, no. They banned the sale of *display-standard* fireworks to the general public (you can imagine what it used to be like when people were letting THEM off at home!) but people can still buy back-garden-sized ones if they're over 18, and those are quite big enough to cause injuries and fires with if the purchaser is that way inclined *sigh*.

Seriously though, what's the point of banning some fireworks but not all? I'm sure the majority of people would like to see the public sale of all of them banned. They're something that only delinquent teenagers and the anti-social find amusing. The rest of us are happier watching them at an organised display.

I'm not convinced. For the past few years, a group of friends I am part of have always held a small private fireworks party. Good food, drink and our own personal display. Half the fun of it is setting our own fireworks off. Of course we're careful about how we do it.

Thing is, completely ban the public sale and you will still have idiots getting hold of them. Difference is they're be illegal fireworks that are unlikely to meet british safety standards and as such be even more dangerous.

You present a good point. I guess if we banned idiots instead of fireworks then there wouldn't a problem. As you say, why should those who act responsibly with fireworks have to be deprived of something that they are using responsibly.

It's a similar arguement to gun ownership in the US. The majority say that they use them responsibly yet firearms and fireworks can cause death and injury.
