Earlier this week, The Independent described Obama as the "smart bet for first black president of the United States". The BBC website said much the same in their coverage of his speech. The American coverage doesn't seem to go quite that far, but it's still pretty damn positive - as
geekchick and others have already pointed out, it's a good speech.
(I still find it slightly scary that if he wins the upcoming Illinois election he'll be only "the fifth black senator in history", mind you. Not that the UK is that much better in this regard...)

Date: 2004-07-28 03:42 pm (UTC)It actually isn't that surprising that there have only been a few blacks in the Senate-I think the percentage of blacks in America is only 10%. And in some places, they would rather chew off their arm than vote for a black person-male or female.

Date: 2004-07-28 03:56 pm (UTC)He's currently running unopposed; the Republican candidate (forever after known as "the guy who forced 7 of 9 to go to sex clubs", it seems) withdrew from the race, and it seems they're not having any luck finding another
sacrificial lambcandidate to replace him.
