Spotted via [livejournal.com profile] warrenelliswire:

Homeland Security Department tells Red Cross to stay out of New Orleans

I can see the logic - but the logic is at least partly based on the assumption that everyone who needs help would be evacuated. And that doesn't seem to be the case, does it?

I spoke to my sister who is a nurse in McComb, MS and she says they are starting to get in New Orleans residents. The Red Cross is in McComb helping them set up shelters at Churches and school and stadiums and are going around and providing meals, water and clothing. I think if the military can get these people out of New Orleans and into shelters in surrounding states the Red Cross will take care of them from there. I've been watching live camera feed from New Orleans and they continue to take bus load after bus load out of New Orleans. I counted 15 buses just now. I think they will get everyone out. They simply cannot stay there in those condiditions. Its a health hazard at this point.

news freak here, it has taken some days but I have managed to find Miriam and Rook from the Big Easy. Still no news of Poppy and Fred.

I was watching news 24, and was amazed at two bits,

1. people buying more weapons at Batton Rouge, when asked why WatMart was doing good business, one lady annouced that the people from New Orleans were arriving with nothing, and she had to protect her stuff.
The more I get to know Americans the less I understand them.

2. There was one of Jesse Jackon's reps being interviewed, and when asked what had they done as far a collecting clothes etc., he just looked alittle stunned. I have a feeling apart from holding a rally it never dawned on them that they should be actually doing something.

I think everyone has been a wee been shocked at it all.

I forgot about that [livejournal.com profile] docbrite was also in the big easy. I was thinking about Poppy Z Brite, who lived in a what they call a shotgun house near the Garden District, or did when I met her.
Actually it is funny because once you sit down and think about who you know, you suddenly realise that you have lots of lj friends who live in the area.

I was horror struck when I realised one of my friends who is on gothgardening lives in Mobil. Fortunately she was on holiday when it happened, but the poor mite does not know if she still has a house left.

[livejournal.com profile] docbrite is Poppy Z Brite's LJ, so we were thinking of the same Poppy...
