Hmm. Ok, I'll trust you on this one...

I don't think many of the UK contingent actually made it to C7 - I heard a great many stories explaining why people didn't think it was worth going that year. But not many saying what it was actually like once you got there.

If it's either Vancouver or New Orleans, I'm likely to be there. If it's Tampa, I'll pass.

Of course, my brother's also meant to be getting married next year, in that place that cannot be fitted into any North American trip conveniently, so that may throw a spanner in the works.

I'm really hoping the Tampa bid wins the vote.

While I could happily live without ever going to Florida and would much prefer to go to New Orleans or Vancouver, I have a lot of faith in Rafe, Angelsil & One Bob's ability to put together an event, their bid is much more geared to the net.goth gathering than goth music festival side of the equation, which is what I go to Convergencefor.

Vancouver would be cool, but it's been on the west coast 2 of the last 3 years which means a lot of people won't show up.

The chair of the New Orleans bid was part of the San Diego bid, which was the least successful Convergence so far, except for the clusterfucks that were New York and San Francisco, and Heather Spear (C1 & C5) isn't willing to associate her name with the bid, although she is "advising" him.


Tampa is only about half a days drive from NOLA, so going to Tampa for CXII and spending a couple of days in New Orleans is entirely viable.

I have to agree with you 100%. I'm not a huge fan of Florida and its weather, but I know that committee will do a great job. Plus, it will more than likely be cheaper to fly there from the UK than the other 2.

Of course, my other niece is getting married in 2006, so the US trip will have to be for that and not for anything else. Family comes first.

Personally, I don't think it's too good a sign if Heather isn't willing to put her name on the NOLA bid.

I don't think anyone I know, either IRL or virtually, actually went.

Was it just timing or was it actually badly organised? I'm afraid I haven't been paying attention.

Good point about the Tampa bid though.

Timing and a bad location.

San Diego has nothing going for it.
It's on the opposite side of the country to pretty much everybody I know.
I think it was to close to C9 for a lot of east coasters to justify another trip out west.
It's on Whitby weekend so none of the British contingent were likely to go.
So all of those added up & piled on top of each other and convinced everybody to not go.

silentq and little_m_moses are the only people I knoew who went.

Ho hum. NOLA it is. Having followed the discussion on agc_afterglow, that's not the one I would have voted for myself (my email address has changed since I last attended, so wasn't voting this time) but I guess we'll see how it goes.

I'm a little concerned that, with both New Orleans and Las Vegas, the draw of a 'cool' city seems to obscure every other aspect of the bid for too many people. Still, that's democracy for ya...

New York proved that in spades - the only reason there wasn't a clusterfuck event there prior to & is that there were 2 people submitting bids & splitting the vote every year.

That's supposed to be the purpose of the pre-vote ping - to let people know that there was a problem so they can do something about it. :-p

Most people do get registered, but there are always going to be problems with a few names here and there.
