The ghosts of gods and working men

Random culture update, just for a change.

I caught the Rowan Williams lecture on TV last night. I'm quite impressed. He's eloquent, rational and intelligent. He also reminds me of [livejournal.com profile] cyberinsekt, which is odd - I think it's the voice and the beard. :)

Christmas present from [livejournal.com profile] imago arrived this morning, and has been living in the CD player since - it's the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France version of Olivier Messiaen's "La Transfiguration". It's complex and unsettling, the perfect soundtrack for something awe-inspiring and scary (which, I guess, is precisely what it's intended to be). I like.

Yesterday also saw another comics binge. The Lucifer 'Inferno' story (very, very nicely done - it gets better every issue), 100 Bullets, Power Company (Kurt Busiek's new DC project - not yet as good as Astro City, but promising...) and...

...the return of Devlin Waugh to the JD Megazine, in a direct sequel to the first Devlin story. With painted art from Colin MacNeil. Oh yes.

Two of my friends at Uni had RW as a tutor and knew him personally. One of them (now a top Evangelical theologian) recently criticised RW's policies on the radio, particularly laying into his stance on homosexuality. Which is odd given that the person involved has secret homosexual tendencies. It must be very confusing being an academic theologian.
