pardon my ignorance, but do people get wasted at rugby games? i mean, is that the norm, like tagging at football games in america? b/c i always pictured big english men kicking the shit out of each other drunk. and the crowd being just as rowdy.
Oh, this was Rugby the place (which gave its name to the game), a grim little town about twenty miles away from Coventry. Or, at least, the station's grim - I've never stayed long enough to examine the rest of it...
But to answer the question... nah, Rugby fans are fine. It's the football (soccer :) fans you have to worry about (especially if you're a goth, or some other "freak"). Rugby fans do seem to get very, very drunk - but in my experience the worst they'll then do is hug you. Or possibly sing anthems at you. :-)
And here's a Rugby player who's prepared to get drunk, hug you, and mebbe even sing an anthem or two... I can do the English, Dutch, Canadian (in English, can't remember the French words) - oh? not National Anthems?
As to Rugby-the-place, did you know there's a Bridget Riley exhibition in the art gallery until August 4th? up for a trip?
And, strictly speaking, Rugby-the-game got its name from Rugby-the-school (which got its name from Rugby-the-place), being "Rugby Football".
As to RtP (I'm getting hyphenosis), it's actually quite a pleasant little town. We could combine the art gallery trip with a little sightseeing, and I seem to remember that there's a couple of rather good bookshops...
Well, that was handy in that I've been vaguely wondering what the 'op' in 'op art' stood for for years but hadn't twigged that it was 'optical'. Interesting, but not really my kind of thing.
I think she was the frist modern painter whose works I knowingly encountered, as the engineering block at the college at which my father taught had some of the 1960s black and white prints on the walls, and I used to stand and look at them in fascination.
I've seen one of her large wall-paintings in the Egyptian tomb colours live, though there was a good TV documentary on her shift to colour quite some years back, and I've always wanted to see more - and, to be honest, we don't get many good art shows in the Coventry area; they tend mostly to be the Massey Ferguson Painters Group's annual exhibition of bad Contstablealikes.
cool. i'd love to see a rugby game. women played that a my all-girl college. i just remember them as dirty, rowdy, and hitting the bar afterwards. as for soccer, i'll be sure to NOT dye my hair pink and wear a floral skirt, and maybe a helmet and bullet proof vest. is it still as bad as it used to be?
