SingStar
- NYE is not the right day to go shopping for songs to download for your PS3 SingStar game. Everyone else is trying to do the same thing, at the same time. It won't cope too well.
- SingStar really shouldn't allow you to do your own karaoke version of Leonard Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat.
- ...or Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart, for that matter.
- On the other hand, Falco's Rock Me Amadeus is a welcome addition to the catalogue. Although it's not the easiest one to sing...
- ...and if you really want to sing along to Auld Lang Syne, you can get Die Toten Hosen's version on one of the German PS2 releases. Might be a bit hard to find, though. :)

You can combine the PS2 versions with PS3 as well, but it's not the most intuitive way to do it - although possibly the general intoxication didn't help with that either... - so we were spared the PS2 Disney singalong, as we couldn't work it out and didn't read the manual. :-)
Two more downloadable songs worthy of mention -
The Pipettes' Pull Shapes, mostly just because I know a bunch of people who read Phonogram, which used it in the last issue...
...and Nick Cave's Ship Song. Another one I'm not entirely sure would make a good party song, much as I love it.

There are about 650 songs in the download store at the moment, with new ones being added more or less weekly. I think it launched with about 100, so they are actively expanding it...
Most of the ones they add are the predictable chart favourites - from Britney Spears to Robbie Williams, The Killers and Queen - but you do get some more unusual stuff as well (aside from the stuff I've mentioned, I think Hawkwind were perhaps the most unexpected find...).
There's a decent selection of 80s too - A-Ha, Starship, Duran Duran, Ultravox etc...

We found Thin Lizzy's "The Boys are Back in Town" extremely difficult because it's so fast (which you don't realise when you just listen to it).
I was well impressed when

I will have a look at some point and see what else I can find. One of the joys of being on maternity leave is that I can play singstar at 10am on a Monday morning if I so desire ;)

Lots of songs seem suited to a female pitch and tone, the thought of seeing people take on Laibach or Industrial standards seems highly amusing.
