1000 albums to hear before you die

As chosen by The Guardian

So, what's the verdict? Worthwhile choices?

Well they have PJ Harvey and the Pixies for a start so i'm not complaining ;)

...also Sisters of Mercy (Floodland), Killing Joke, Siouxsie (Juju), Tinariwen, Fela Kuti, Salif Keita, Adam and the Ants, Laurie Anderson (Big Science), DAF, Thomas Dolby, Bellowhead and Nine Inch Nails (Pretty Hate Machine)...

Enough to keep me happy. Not so sure about Cilla Black, mind you. :)

Floodland? Pah! First & Last & Always is by far the better album. From Pulp I prefer We Love Life to Different Class.

I know it's a new one, but Madeline Peyroux's Half The Perfect World is amazing, definitely my favourite album of the moment. It's a shame they missed that one. Her versions of Leonard Cohen's 'Blue alert' and Tom Waits 'Looking for the heart of Saturday night' are just beautiful.

It would be a tough call for anybody! Haven't looked at it all yet, but choosing the Beach Boys Today! over Pet Sounds is a curious choice.

Very mixed bag, but interesting. For every Isn't Anything there's a Scissor Sisters. Much as you'd expect, really.

A quick glance shows it's missing a lot of my "You haven't heard this??? What is wrong with you??" albums. And in a lot of the cases, the artists entirely.

I started reading it, got as far as Lily Allen, and then switched off in disgust.

The only sort of hit list she should be on is entirely different.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] malal. There were some bands on there that don't deserve to be and others missing completely that should be there. And some of the choices of which album were "huh?"

A list like that is like the proverbial chain, and only as good as its weakest entry. Would you want your favourite music showcased next to Abba or Cilla?

They chose Unhalfbricking for Fairport Convention when the clear choice for Fairport is Liege and Lief.

On the whole, I can't be arsed to read the list.

No. I mean, where are the Yes albums? There are at least two in the 70s which represent the best (and the most extravagant) of prog rock - Tales from Topographic Oceans, and Relayer. If you are going to experience the way music has changed over the decades, to ignore Yes is unforgiveable.
