UPG question... Poll 2003?

It's getting to that time of year.

So, does anyone think there ought to be another UPG poll? Or would even mentioning the subject on there launch another round of...

a) It's discredited
b) We're all too apathetic
c) Wozzat?

It could be fun. And it'd be nice to know what everyone's listening to these days, but...

I'd like to see one, despite having taken approximately a year's hiatus from upg. Would like to get back into the swing of things, but I'll have to skip the "favourite post all year" etc. type questions.

Indeed. If it were merely questions about "favourite band", "best gig", etc. I'd be in favour. Even Back In the Day, I rarely submitted answers to the poll because I don't give a stuff who is Most Fanciable Male/Female, and I find the whole concept of the "you're gone and we don't want you back" and the "you're gone and we miss you" categories blatantly offensive.

PS. And we all know the shitstorm that stealing another newsgroup's poll brings upon us.

*nod* Yeah, I'm inclined to be in favour of keeping the music stuff and losing the cliquey wankiness too. Mind you, that could be because statements beginning with 'we' wind me up. I know there are people out there who believe that there is such a beastie as The Collective Will Of U.P.G, but it's not a theory I've ever subscribed to myself. [1]

On the other hand, saying 'keep these questions, lose these ones' would probably unleash a shitstorm of aggrievement from people who couldn't craft a decent gig review or even a halfway reasoned argument on one side or other of the various upg 'discussions' to save their lives but who have got the idea into their heads from God knows where that there's some kind of unspoken goth hierarchy [2] out there and like the idea of trying to push themselves up it by means of Most Fancied / Most Missed / Most Likely To Be Seen Outside In Broad Daylight In A Pair Of Lime Green Knickers / Whatever.

Which almost tempts me to go and suggest it.

*shrug* I'd be all inf avour of posting it "as is" and saying "don't feel you have to vote for every category if you don't want to".

Then accompany the results with a total of how many people voted for each, and possibly use that as a justification for dropping them from next year's poll.

Of course, if the "Most Fancied" / "Most missed" / "least missed" get near 100% participation, then so be it. That's Usenet and, if it's got majority support, arguing that nobody should be able to vote on it isn't likely to achieve anything.

Ah, KM themselves are fine - a bit loud and brash, but no worse than many of the other upg regulars.

In the current atmosphere, I think Phildo would win the "you've gone, and we never want you back" category, though.
